c) Sailing blog (web diary) - click
Please read carefully..
Please do NOT try and progress through the setup instructions until you have tested your Internet connection. Without a reliable, working internet connection you will not be able to pickup your email! Some difficulties encountered stem from trying to setup the Iridium connection AND the email software at the same time - and when it doesn't work you have double the trouble to work out!
It doesn't matter how you connect to the Internet, but before you go any further verify that you can connect to the internet reliably and open up a small web page without any issues, i.e. http://www.google.com or one you know
Note: It's fine to setup email before you setup the satellite/mobile connection, but basically use an Internet connection which you know to be working reliably |
The first stage is to get your computer correctly connecting to the internet. At this stage you don't need a satellite or mobile phone, your normal dialup or broadband connection will work just as well in order to test the email setup.
GComm Mail Setup Instructions:
1) Installing GComm Mail Compression Software Please use the CD sent to you when you registered with us . This software compresses the communications between your computer and the servers, and will significantly decrease your call costs.
To install the software, simply insert the disk and click on the install icon on the CD. This just puts a few files into the "Program Files" directory. It's a very simple install - nothing goes into the "Windows" directory and there is no messing with the registry!
It should startup automatically once the installation is complete (and also everytime you reboot) and put an icon near the clock (looks like a red boat).
2) Configuring Outlook Express Automatically Using GComm Mail
Your username and password are supplied by GComm Mail. If you have lost them, (or need to create an account), then please contact us. These login details are required to access the system from both your email program and also if you are in an internet cafe and logging in via the webmail.
-
Double click the small "red boat" icon down by the clock, and then in the dialog which appears choose "Tools | Setup Outlook Express" and follow the instructions. You will be prompted to enter your GComm Mail account User Name
- That's all there is to it! Now connect to the internet and send us a test message so that we can check everything is working.
If you have already configured Outlook Express previously, then the automatic setup will detect this and just offer to modify/repair the settings for use with GComm Mail This is useful if you suspect that the settings have become corrupted for any reason.
3) Set up your satellite phone / mobile connection
When you have finished setting up your email settings, connect your Iridium telephone to your computer using the appropriate
com port and switch on your Iridium telephone. Then right click on the small red sailing boat and choose “Configure Sat Phone”
Click,”auto scan & install”. Your satellite telephone should be automatically detected, the driver will be installed and a “Windows
dial-up-connection created.
Connect by clicking on “start” then “Connect to” then “Iridium”
