Iridium Direct Internet 3 for 9555 and 9575 Internet Use

Iridium have just announced new software to use when using the Iridium 9555 and 9575 satellite phones as a modem to connect your laptop to the internet.

Previous software will cease to work from the 31st October 2016 so if you use this software on your laptop you will need to uninstall it and then visit https://www.iridium.com/Search?qry=direct+internet. Download the appropriate version of Iridium Direct Internet 3 Installer and the User Manuals (2 downloads) and install on your device.

Windows 10 does not yet support Iridium devices so it will not work for that Operating System.  We expect that Windows 10 will be supported within the next 6 months (Q2 2017).

Benefits for users

The new Steelhead solution greatly improves the acceleration performance of Direct Internet.
  • Time for data transfers is compressed even further, especially for larger files.
  • Binary data may be transmitted – this was not possible with Slipstream.
  • Browsing is made faster although it depends on the site (how much compression is possible).

The Iridium Re-Epoch

March 3rd 2015 18:00:00 UTC

As part of standard satellite network operations, Iridium periodically resets the Iridium system time count, in a process known as a "re‐epoch". It consists of a one-time adjustment in Iridium time. Iridium plans to reset the system time on March 3rd, 2015 at 18:00:00 UTC.

For Iridium satellite phone users, this epoch change on March 3rd, 2015 will have no impact on service availability and the ability to successfully complete phone calls, SMS messages, or data services.

However, the appearance of the time and date will revert back to December 29, 2007 , 7:26:29 UTC on the handset display and will progress on this baseline until phone settings are adjusted to the new Iridium epoch time manually by the user. The user can reset their phone at any time after March 3, 2015.

Iridium GO! devices will handle the time change automatically and do not require reprogramming.

Reprogramming Instructions.

Iridium 9555 and Iridium Extreme® customers can restore the correct time settings by following these steps:
1 Dial *#99#2014051114235500#
2 Press the green key
3 Turn off the phone...wait 60 seconds then turn on the phone

Iridium 9500, 9505 and 9505A customers will need to set the updated time and date from their phone menu. The extended phone set‐up menu must be set to "On” (see page 137 of Iridium 9505A user guide, page 149 of the Iridium 9500 user guide, or page 139 of the Iridium 9505 user guide), then follow these instructions to set time and date:
